Jammu and Kashmir, on Saturday (January 25), completed a stunning victory over heavyweights Mumbai in the Elite Group A clash of the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season. They beat Mumbai by 5 wickets at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC, Mumbai to move to the top of the points table.
On the other hand, Mumbai are at the third spot in the points table and are at risk of missing out on a spot for the quarterfinals. Mumbai's decision to bat first backfired completely as they failed to score big even with the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma in the team. The record Ranji champions were bowled out for just 120 runs.
They were reeling at 47/7 at one stage before a fighting fifty from out-of-favour India allrounder guided them to a 100-plus total. For Jammu and Kashmir, Umar Nazir and Yudhvir Singh picked up 4 wickets each.
With the bat, Jammu and Kashmir scored 206 runs to take a handy lead of 86 runs. Opener Shubham Khajuria top-scored for his side, scoring 53 while Mohit Avasthi picked up 5 wickets for Mumbai.
In the second innings, Mumbai were off to a good start with Jaiswal and Rohit adding 54 runs for the opening wickets. However, once the partnership was broken, the floodgates opened and Mumbai found themselves reeling at 101/7.
Thakur then impressed with the bat once again and scored a brilliant ton. Tanush Kotian scored a fifty as well and the duo took Mumbai's score past the 200-run mark. In the end, Mumbai scored 290 runs to set Jammu and Kashmir a target of 205 runs.

The memorable victory over Mumbai has not only helped Jammu and Kashmir move to the top of the points table but also create history. They have now become only the second team in the history of the Ranji Trophy to register back-to-back wins over Mumbai. They first beat Mumbai in the 2014-15 season before registering their latest win.
The first team to achieve this milestone were Karnataka, doing it in the 2014-15 & 2017-18 seasons. Mumbai are also yet to beat Jammu and Kashmir in the Ranji Trophy. Both teams have played two games so far and the team from Northern India emerged victorious on both occasions.
The only other team, apart from Jammu & Kashmir, to beat Mumbai twice in a row (2014-15 & 2024-25 season), is Karnataka, who beat them outright in the 2014-15 & 2017-18 seasons #ranjitrophy2025

DYK? 42 times #RanjiTrophy Champs, MUMBAI, are yet to defeat Jammu-Kashmir in the National Tournament. They have now lost both their H2H games outright and that too at home.
