Ace Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah is unlikely to regain full fitness ahead of the three-match series against Ireland, which is set to start next month. According to reports, the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar will consider his fitness report before the series against Ireland.

Jasprit Bumrah has been out of action since September last year after suffering a stress fracture in his back. The right-arm pacer was ruled out of crucial series, including the Asia Cup 2022, T20 World Cup 2022, and World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia.

Jasprit Bumrah Is Not Match Ready – Reports

As per the latest reports, Jasprit Bumrah has been bowling 8-10 overs every day at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). However, the selectors have not received a positive report from physios and doctors regarding his fitness for the upcoming series against Ireland.

“There used to be an unwritten rule that if someone’s coming back from a long lay-off due to an injury, he needs to play some domestic cricket to prove his fitness,” a BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity.

“I guess NCA and the selection committee has made an exemption for him since he is not a part of the West Zone squad for Deodhar Trophy games. Also, it means that, till now, he is not match ready or else he would have played one Deodhar game,” the source added.

Jasprit Bumrah Might Need To Do A Lot Of Work – Reports

The selectors will be considering Jasprit Bumrah’s workload as he has to field 40 overs in humid Sri Lankan conditions during the Asia Cup 2023. The report added that Bumrah needs to put in a lot of work to be available for selection.

“Before the Ireland selection meeting, the NCA physio will update Agarkar and Co with the fitness report of all the players.

If physio’s report states that Bumrah, apart from bowling four overs, will also be able to field 16 overs and subsequently 40 overs (in ODIs) with full intensity, he will be selected,” the source further stated.

“As per the latest information, the panel hasn’t received a green light from them. The selectors won’t just see bowling fitness, they would also take into account if he is in a position to field in humid conditions in Sri Lanka during the Asia Cup. He might need to do a lot of work in the deep. So it is not just about 7-8 overs of bowling in the nets.”
