India National Cricket Team fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is the front-runner to replace Rohit Sharma as the captain of the team in the longest format of the game. However, he might not be the long-term option due to the injury issues, as per the reports in PTI.

India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is currently the vice-captain of the team and if the protocols are to be followed, he will be the next captain. He captained the team in the absence of Rohit Sharma in Perth and also was in charge when the regular skipper dropped himself in last.

Jasprit Bumrah will be leading India in the Tests against England, not a long-term choice with injury concerns

But, having played all the games with the bulk of bowling under his belt, Jasprit Bumrah got injured in the last match of the series. The reports suggested that the fast bowler has experienced back swelling and will even miss the league stage of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

However, now with him being injured, this has raised a lot of questions inside the head of the selection committee if Bumrah can be the permanent choice to lead India or not. For now, he seems to be the first choice and it is expected that he will take the charge soon.

The reports claimed that, if fit, Bumrah will be leading the India National Cricket Team in the Tests against England later this year. However, this might also see selectors naming a vice-captain as well who can take the charge if there are some unforeseen circumstances.

Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the two names that have emerged to be vice-captain of the team in Tests

The reports added that Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the two names that have emerged to be vice-captain of the team. But, it is learned that the keeper-batter, who also is a captain in IPL, is looking the most suitable for the role of vice-captain.

Jasprit Bumrah's injury in the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 has produced a school of thought if the fast bowler can remain fit for long periods. He also is crucial for India in the white-ball games, and given his workload, he might not be leading the team for a while.

Selectors also have kept Plan B in mind, vice-captain to be groomed under Jasprit Bumrah before taking charge

With no guarantee about Jasprit Bumrah's injury, the selectors also have kept Plan B in mind. According to that, they might have another equally strong captaincy candidate who can be groomed as vice-captain under the pacer and then take the role permanently.

It remains to be seen who among Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal will be taking over the vice-captaincy of the team. Both the players have been the best performers for India National Cricket Team in Tests of late, having scored truckloads of runs for the team.
