Oman captain Jatinder Singh fires warning to Australia ahead of T20 WC clash: On Friday, Australia will be facing Oman in the final group stage game of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Australia has been knocked out of the competition after Zimbabwe’s match against Ireland was washed out. They lost two of their fixtures in the competition against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. Oman is also last placed in Group B, having lost their three games.

This will be a dead rubber match for both nations, as already the 8 teams have qualified for the next stages. Ahead of the match, Oman captain Jatinder Singh dropped a comment about Australia during the pre-match press conference. He feels that his team sees the last match of this tournament as an opportunity to upset an inexperienced Australia team.

Oman can upset Australia

After being asked if there’s a chance of Oman beating Australia in the final game, he stated, "One hundred percent this is an opportunity," Jatinder Singh said. "And our boys are looking forward to it. Because T20 is a game of momentum and the moments, and if you play those moments right, you can do anything on that particular day."

"Australia is not doing well at the moment… it is the best time to crush them. The boys are really positive. They are looking forward to the match against Australia to make their mark."

Australia came into this tournament with an inexperienced bowling attack, with Josh Hazelwood and Pat Cummins ruled out due to different injuries. The side captain, Mitchell Marsh, also did not play in the first couple of games after picking up a groin injury. Overall, it was a disastrous tournament for the Aussies.

'If we have the franchise cricket happening in the country, '- Jatinder Singh

Oman captain Jatinder Singh was asked how to make the side more competitive in the long term. Jatinder Singh feels playing franchise cricket for the nation’s players would be one option. However, Oman did not have a significant cricket calendar in 2025, playing only 15 T20Is and eight ODIs.

"Well if I have to sum up [how Oman can improve], it would be if we have the franchise cricket happening in the country or our guys get a chance to play franchise cricket elsewhere," Jatinder said. "I think we can fill that gap and they can bring vast amount of experience for our national team.

Associate nations want to play more competitive cricket

Jatinder Singh concluded, saying, "But if we don't get to play competitive cricket, whereas other teams are getting to play the competitive cricket, we will need to fill that gap. There have been instances where we've been inviting the teams to come and play in Oman. The response has been really delayed, or we don't get any response. So I think if we have the franchise cricket, that would really fill the gap."

The associate nations in this edition of the competition have played well, giving the big nations tough times and nearly creating upsets in the competition. Some of the players have been urged to play more games against the full-member sides to improve their skills and temperament against the big sides.
