Board of Control for Cricket in India Secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that the Indian board has rejected the offer to host the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in October. Jay Shah stated that the International Cricket Council (ICC) approached the BCCI to host the multi-team tournament later this year.

The ICC is considering moving the Women’s T20 World Cup from Bangladesh due to the country's political instability. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina submitted her resignation from the post. Recent security issues from anti-government protests have led to doubts about hosting the tournament as planned.

Bangladesh's interim government is trying to save the Women’s T20 World Cup. The ICC is exploring all options, including relocating the tournament. Countries like India, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK have imposed travel restrictions, which complicated matters for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

We Are Going To Host The ODI Women's World Cup - Jay Shah

During his interaction with TOI's reporters and editors in Mumbai, Jay Shah confirmed that India will not host the Women’s T20 World Cup. Shah stated that the BCCI declined the ICC's request, adding that India does not want to host consecutive World Cups.

"They (ICC) had asked the BCCI if they can host the event, but I flatly refused. We would be still in the monsoon season and next year, we are going to host the ODI Women's World Cup. I do not want to give the impression that I want to host consecutive World Cups," Jay Shah was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

India recently hosted the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup. The BCCI is set to host the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup and co-host the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup with Sri Lanka. After India declined the offer, the ICC is considering Sri Lanka and the UAE as alternative hosts for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.

The Women’s T20 World Cup is planned to be played in Bangladesh from October 3 to 20. The tournament will feature ten teams playing 23 matches over 18 days. Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka and the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet were selected as venues for the event.

A New Government Has Just Been Formed Over There - Jay Shah

Bangladesh is currently in Pakistan to play a two-match Test series. The Bangladesh team will then travel to India for two Tests and three T20Is, starting September 19 in Chennai.

Shah emphasized that there has been no contact from the new Bangladeshi government yet for the upcoming series. Shah added that the BCCI will ensure the series is hosted successfully.

"None as of now. A new government has just been formed over there. They will surely reach out to us. If they do not, I will surely reach out to them. For us, Bangladesh series is very important. We will try our best to host it," Shah added.
