Jay Shah to decide Mohsin Naqvi's future as BCCI switches the RED SIGNAL for Asia Cup trophy

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has escalated its dispute with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) regarding the Asia Cup trophy. Notably, the Board formally wrote to ACC chief Mohsin Naqvi, demanding the trophy be returned to India, which won the summit clash against Pakistan on September 28.
India and Pakistan faced off three times during the 2025 T20 Asia Cup, with the Men in Blue winning all three encounters, including the final match. However, the series was played under a cloud of political and diplomatic tension.
Relations between the two nations were strained following the Pahalgam terror attack in April. India then launched Operation Sindoor to target terrorists in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK). There were verbal exchanges on the field and official protests during the T20 tournament in the UAE.
Mohsin Naqvi Directs the Formal Ceremony for the Asia Cup Trophy Handover to India
The Asian Cricket Council, following directives from its Pakistani president Mohsin Naqvi, reportedly responded that the Asia Cup trophy can only be handed to an Indian representative during a formal ceremony.
With Mohsin Naqvi unwilling to relinquish this role and the BCCI refusing to give him the platform, the dispute is expected to be taken to the International Cricket Council. A board meeting is set to take place in Dubai during the first week of November.
“We had decided not to take the trophy from the ACC chairman, who happens to be one of the main leaders of Pakistan (Pakistan's interior minister). That does not mean that the gentleman will take away the trophy and the medals,” BCCI secretary, Devajit Saikia, had said.
"It was very unfortunate, very unsporting. We hope the trophy and the medals will be given to India as soon as possible. We will definitely lodge a serious complaint against this act of the ACC chairperson in the ICC meeting," he added.
India-Pakistan Tensions Rise at ACC Meeting Over Asia Cup Trophy Controversy
Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated further during the recent ACC meeting on September 30, when BCCI representatives Ashish Shelar and Rajeev Shukla confronted ACC chief Mohsin Naqvi over the Asia Cup trophy controversy.
The issue was discussed among the ACC’s key member boards, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. However, given Mohsin Naqvi's position as ACC chair, an immediate solution seems unlikely despite India’s backing from Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.
The Indian players refused to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts. They also didn’t want to accept the trophy from Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan’s interior minister.
India-Pakistan Rivalry Overshadows Asia Cup 2025
India refused to engage with Pakistani players and staff during the tournament. The PCB requested the removal of ICC match referee Andy Pycroft, stating that Pycroft had instructed Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha not to shake hands with India’s Suryakumar Yadav during the toss of their first clash.
Pakistan also reportedly considered boycotting their Group A match against the UAE if their demand was not met. During a Super 4 clash, multiple on-field exchanges occurred between players. Provocative gestures and statements from both sides prompted the ICC to impose punishments.
The rivalry continued in the Asia Cup final, where India and Pakistan met for the third time in the tournament. India emerged victorious in a thrilling contest, securing the championship while the off-field controversies continued to dominate discussions.
