Jeevan Mendis Announces Retirement From International Cricket

Sri Lanka all-rounder Balapuwaduge Manukulasuriya Amith Jeevan Mendis has announced his retirement from international cricket.

Jeevan Mendis, an all-rounder who bowls leg-spin, has represented Sri Lanka in the 2012 T20 World Cup and 2015 World Cup. After three years of break from international cricket, Mendis was picked up for the T20I series against Bangladesh in February 2018. Meanwhile, he was also included in Sri Lanka’s 2019 Cricket World Cup Squad.

He made his One Day Internationals (ODI) debut on June 1, 2010, against Zimbabwe and last played One Day Internationals on June 28, 2019, against South Africa.

Overall he has played 58 ODIs for Sri Lanka and was able to score 636 runs at an average of 18.70 including one half-century and he bagged 28 wickets in his career at an average of 43.00, an economy of 5.14 and a strike rate of 50.1.

Jeevan Mendis played 22 T20 Internationals for Sri Lanka and scored 207 runs and bagged 12 wickets. Mendis also participated in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and was part of the Delhi franchise, he played only 3 IPL games in which he scored 23 runs and picked just one wicket.

The 38-year-old Jeevan Mendis took to Twitter to announce his retirement from international cricket and he stated that he had an ” incredible journey” with Sri Lanka Cricket. He wrote:

It was an incredible journey with Sri Lanka Cricket,which I was honoured to be a part of since 2010. So many valuable lessons learnt and beautiful memories I cherish throughout this amazing journey. I wish to thank all my coaches and teammates. I am eternally grateful! @OfficialSLC”
