Former England skipper Joe Root broke the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s huge record during the ongoing first Test match against India. Joe Root surpassed Sachin Tendulkar to become the leading run-getter in India-England matches in the longer format of the game.
Joe Root scored 29 runs in England’s first innings of the series opener at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Thursday, January 25. The batter was dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja while attempting a premeditated sweep shot in the second session.
Before the start of the first Test match, the former England captain needed 10 runs to surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record and claim the top spot on the elite list. Root achieved this milestone by hitting a boundary off Axar Patel in the 21st over of England’s first innings.
Joe Root Breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s Record In First Test Match
Joe Root now boasts 2,555 runs in 26 Tests against India at an impressive average of 62.31, featuring nine centuries and 10 half-centuries. Sachin Tendulkar is in second place with 2,535 runs from 32 Tests at an average of 51.73, with 7 centuries and 13 half-centuries.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar holds the third spot, amassing 2,483 runs in 38 matches at an average of 38.20, including four hundreds and 16 fifties. Alastair Cook is next in line with 2,431 runs in 30 Tests, averaging 47.66, and scoring seven tons along with nine fifties.
Virat Kohli, who withdrew from the first two Tests in the ongoing five-match series for personal reasons, secures the fifth position in the elite list. The 35-year-old has amassed 1,991 runs in 28 matches at an average of 42.36, including five centuries and nine half-centuries.

Root has an impressive record in Tests in India, scoring 981 runs in 21 innings at an average of 49.05, including two centuries. He made his Test debut in India, where he scored 93 runs in the match. He amassed 491 runs in five Tests in 2016 and 368 runs in four Tests in 2021.
England Skipper Ben Stokes Smashes Half-Century
Zak Crawley (20) and Ben Duckett (35) formed a 55-run partnership for the first wicket in 11.5 overs. However, India made a comeback and secured three wickets. Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Crawley and Duckett, while Ravindra Jadeja took Ollie Pope’s wicket.
Root and Jonny Bairstow steadied the innings with a crucial partnership for the fourth wicket. However, Bairstow (37), Root, and Ben Foakes (4) were dismissed in quick succession. The visiting team lost eight wickets for 215 runs before the tea break on the opening day.
