England National Cricket Team batter Joe Root has openly rejected the ODI captaincy role. He said that he has done his time as a skipper, and whoever gets the role will do a brilliant job for the team in the format.

England National Cricket Team are in search of a new skipper in the ODI format. This is because Jos Buttler stepped down from the role after the team had a horrendous campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The Three Lions faced a group-stage exit as they didn't win a single game in the tournament.

Jos Buttler struggled as captain in white-ball format

Jos Buttler, as a skipper, was already under a lot of scanner as England under him had a tough time after winning the ICC T20 World 2022. Following that, they struggled big time in the white-ball format, failing to win even bilateral series as well as big tournaments.

Jos Buttler failed as a captain as well as the leader in the ICC World Cup 2023. They also England played a poor brand of cricket in the tournament, as they failed to qualify for the semi-final. It was expected that they would come up with a brilliant performance in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, but that too wasn't the case.

I think I've done my time as a captain in an English ship - Joe Root

With England in need of a skipper, Joe Root ruled himself out, expressing his confidence in the player who will be appointed as the captain. He admitted that they were far away from best in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 but added that there's a lot of talent in the group. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said:

"I don't think so. I think that ship sailed. I think I've done my time as a captain in an English ship. But I'm sure whoever gets the opportunity to do it will be extremely proud and will do a brilliant job. It's disappointing. We definitely didn't play anywhere near what we're capable of.

"The talent and the ability within that group in terms of results was below some part. But like I said, there's so much talent and there's so much more to come from that team. You know, you look at Brendon coming in, he's had two months before the tournament to try and put across his ideas, his views," Joe Root said.

It's a really good opportunity to reset and to move forward - Joe Root

Joe Root added that with a new captain coming in, it will be a great opportunity for the team to reset and move forward. He said that they wanted to go back to the period between 2015 and 2019. He explained:

"And there's going to be a new captain coming in. So it's sort of a new combination. I think it's a really good opportunity to reset and to move forward again as a group and get back to the heights that we know we're capable of and where we were in and around that 15 to 2019 phase."

Harry Brook, who is the vice-captain of England in white-ball, is the frontrunner to lead the team. Also, Ben Stokes' name is floating around for the same.
