Former England captains Michael Atherton and Eoin Morgan shared their thoughts on the Jos Buttler-led team's loss against India in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024. Michael Atherton stated that England struggled throughout the tournament with slow, low-pitch conditions in the West Indies and USA.

The Jos Buttler-led team's T20 World Cup 2024 campaign ended with a loss against the Rohit Sharma-led team in the semi-final match. The England team suffered a 68-run loss at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on June 27. Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel ran through England's batting lineup.

Very Much Suited The India Team - Michael Atherton

Speaking on Sky Sports, Michael Atherton highlighted that the conditions in the T20 World Cup semifinal favored India. Atherton added that England panicked after they lost three wickets in the powerplay. He said that India were at their 'absolute best' in the knockout match.

"In conditions that very much suited the India team. It was a kind of slow, low pitch, those conditions that England have looked less good on in this tournament and generally historically, you would say, whereas India, that's them at their absolute best."

"Their spinners, Axar Patel and Kuldeep in particular, once England lost three wickets in the powerplay, there was a bit of panic thereafter," Michael Atherton told Sky Sports.

That's Just The Natural Process - Eoin Morgan

During the same conversation, Eoin Morgan said that some players might retire after the T20 World Cup. He noted that players like Chris Jordan, Jonny Bairstow, and Moeen Ali are at the end of their careers. Morgan acknowledged that England met their pre-tournament expectation of reaching the semifinals.

"Yeah, I think (a few players will now move on). There is a bit of honest reflection. You will have players that are coming towards the end of their career and even into the twilight years, like Jordan, Jonny Bairstow, and Moeen Ali."

"This happens after every Ashes and every World Cup. That's just the natural process that sides go through. But you sit here and pre-tournament, you would have said, What's the level of expectations on England's shoulders? It would be to reach the semifinals, and they did," Eoin Morgan said.

The England team was on the verge of elimination after their first game against Scotland was abandoned, and they lost to Australia in the second match. However, the team advanced to the Super 8 stage after the Australia team recorded a victory against Scotland in Group B of the ICC tournament.

England defeated the West Indies and the United States of America in Group 2 to secure a spot in the semi-finals. They showed dominance over associate teams, but their defeat to India marked their third loss to full-member opposition. They beat the West Indies among full-member teams during the event.

The England cricket team will face Australia in their next white-ball series at home. The two teams will play three T20Is and five ODIs in September. It's unclear whether Jos Buttler will lead the white-ball team in their next assignment.
