The Paarl Royals received a major setback on Tuesday, August 6, as England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler withdrew from the next edition of the SA20 for national commitments.
Buttler expressed his regret and appreciation to the Royals' fans while announcing his decision on social media. The Paarl Royals shared a video on their social media handle X, where Buttler announced that he will not be returning to the SA20 in 2025, as he wants to focus on England's responsibilities.
Jos Buttler pulls out of SA20 2025 for England duty
The SA20 2025 is scheduled from January 9 to February 8, overlapping with the England Cricket Team's tour of India, which includes five T20Is and three ODIs from January 22 to February 12.
Given that Buttler decided to pull out of the SA20 2025 to dedicate his focus and energy to the national duty after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) backed him as white-ball captain following the team’s dismal performance recently.
As Buttler is expected to remain as England's white-ball captain until the 2025 Champions Trophy, the talented wicketkeeper batter wants to focus on his international commitments, and they have a big tour during the time when SA20 2025 will be held, so he had to take that tough call.
In the Paarl Royals’ video on X, Jos Buttler said: “This is a message to the Paarl Royals fans. I am disappointed that I won't be coming back to the SA20 this year. There are some England games on, and my full focus will be there. It's a shame I won't be coming back to the tournament.
I have got a lot of love for the tournament. Huge amount of love for the Paarl Royals and especially the Paarl Royals fans. I wish you all the best in the competition, and hopefully I can come back in the future.”

Earlier, Jos Buttler was ruled out of the ongoing The Hundred 2024 with a calf injury. Buttler was due to captain Manchester Originals in the 100-ball tournament, but after missing their first three matches, the England captain announced not to be able to take part in the ongoing The Hundred 2024.
Jos Buttler had stated: “Gutted to be missing The Hundred this year. Best of luck to the Manchester Originals for the rest of the campaign. Working hard to be 100% fit asap.”
Jos Buttler was last seen in action in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies. Buttler is expected to return to action next month when the England team will face Australia in a three-match T20I series and five-match ODI series against Australia between September 11-29.
Recently, Matthew Mott has stepped down as the white-ball head coach, with assistant coach Marcus Trescothick taking over the job temporarily for the upcoming limited-overs series against the arch-rivals Australia. ECB is now on the hunt for a new white-ball head coach.
