Kevin Pietersen joins elite list after ICC Hall of Fame recognition

Kevin Pietersen has been one of the finest cricketers for England across formats. The former England batter was inducted into the Hall of Fame on Saturday. This is a historic moment for Kevin Pietersen. He received the coveted award at an event in Edinburgh with Sourav Ganguly and Anjum Chopra.

There are currently 34 England cricketers enshrined in the prestigious ICC Cricket Hall of Fame, representing both men's and women's international formats across different eras.

The likes of W.G. Grace, Jack Hobbs, Len Hutton, Wally Hammond, Colin Cowdrey, Denis Compton, Sydney Barnes, Fred Trueman, Geoffrey Boycott, Ian Botham, Graham Gooch, Alan Knott, Derek Underwood, Bob Willis, Ted Dexter, Harold Larwood, Jim Laker, Tom Graveney, George Lohmann, Wilfred Rhodes, Herbert Sutcliffe, Maurice Tate, Godfrey Evans, Peter May, Ken Barrington, and Alastair Cook.

Kevin Pietersen celebrated his induction into the ICC Hall of Fame as a wonderful honour and the highest distinction a player could receive. He confessed that it would take some time for the achievement to completely set in.

Kevin Pietersen: "It’s a great honour to be inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame. To be recognised in this way and see my name beside so many of the game's greats is truly humbling. It is the highest recognition a cricketer can receive, and I know it will take some time for it to fully sink in."

"I feel privileged to have played across all three formats of the game, and I look back on my career with immense pride and satisfaction. I would like to thank the ICC for this wonderful honour, as well as my family, teammates, coaches and everyone who supported me throughout my journey. This recognition is one I will cherish forever."

Kevin Pietersen's career

This honour recognises his spectacular career, during which he scored over 13,797 international runs and led England to their first ICC World Twenty20 title in 2010. He became the 34th England player to join this elite list of the ICC Hall of Fame.

In the shortest format, he averaged close to 38 with a strike rate of over 141, but in ODI and Test cricket, he averaged over 40 (40.73) and 47.28, respectively. Back in August 2018, the ECB nominated him to England's best Test XI in honour of the country's 1000th Test match.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah stated that he is overwhelmed to announce the latest players inducted to the Hall of Fame. Sourav Ganguly, who previously was announced apart from him another Indian, Anjum Chopra, were added to the Hall of Fame.

Mr Jay Shah, ICC Chairman, said, "I am delighted to welcome the latest inductees into the ICC Hall of Fame, a tribute to the extraordinary individuals whose achievements have contributed greatly to our sport. This year's inductees represent the highest standards of excellence, and each one of them has earned the admiration of fans around the world.

"Sourav, Anjum and Kevin have all led their national teams with pride, and I would like to congratulate them on behalf of the ICC for this richly deserved honour. Their place in the ICC Hall of Fame ensures their achievements will be celebrated for generations to come, standing alongside the game's greatest figures."
