The iconic Eden Gardens of Kolkata are all set to host the titanic clash between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 60th match of the ongoing IPL 2024 on Saturday, May 11.
However, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are currently the table-toppers with 16 points from 11 games, and the Mumbai Indians (MI) are knocked out of the IPL 2024 Playoffs race, but the star spinner Varun Chakravarthy asserted that the hosts are not taking the five-time champions lightly at all.
Chakravarthy, the mystery spinner of KKR, stressed the need for his team to remain focused and prepared for the challenges that the MI can throw at the hosts in the IPL 2024 clash on Saturday in Kolkata.
Varun Chakravarthy warns KKR against complacency
He highlighted the formidable nature of the MI, despite their elimination from the ongoing IPL 2024, saying they ‘don't have any edge over Mumbai and are ready for everything’.
The Indian star said that MI have a lot of match-winners in their squad, and they have been a very dangerous team in the tournament over the years, so the KKR have to approach this match with the utmost seriousness and maintain consistency for a top-two finish in the league table.
Chakravarthy also mentioned the extra responsibility that comes with being at the top of the points table, so they are just focusing on the basics and remaining consistent, as they are aiming to record their ninth win of the ongoing IPL 2024 in their final game at home in Kolkata.
We don't have any edge over MI: Varun Chakravarthy
KKR spinner Varun Chakravarthy stated: “We don't have any edge over MI because they are out of the tournament. They are a champion side...They are full of stars and match winners, and a very dangerous team anywhere. Even if we have to win one match to qualify, we have to be well-prepared and, on our toes, and look to finish in top-two. When you're on top of the table, it gives you more responsibility... The best thing we can do right now is be consistent, which is tougher than trying to find out something and improve on it. It's about doing the basics right.”
Meanwhile, the skies over Eden Gardens in Kolkata are currently covered in clouds, as there are concerns about potential rain interruptions during the match. Given the cloudy conditions, fans are keeping their fingers crossed, hoping for good weather so that they can enjoy the game in Kolkata.
Speaking about the pitch at the Eden Gardens, it favors both batters and bowlers, but there has been a trend of high scores in this IPL season, so anything can happen. Kolkata has a reputation for producing formidable totals, but recent matches have seen relatively lower scores, with teams managing only 170+ totals in the last three IPL 2024 matches at the venue.
