As the grand stage is set for the IPL 2024 final between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Kolkata Knight Rider (KKR), all eyes are on the SRH captain Pat Cummins, as he is on the cusp of making history by joining an elite club of legendary MS Dhoni.
With the prospect of lifting the prestigious IPL trophy in Chennai on Sunday, May 26, Cummins could etch his name into the record books, as he is likely to join the former India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni as only the second captain to achieve the remarkable World Cup-IPL double.
The IPL 2024 Final is scheduled to take place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai between the KKR and SRH on Sunday. And if Cummins manages to lead the Orange Army to the title triumph, he will equal Dhoni’s historic record of winning the ICC Cricket World Cup and IPL in the same season.
Pat Cummins set to equal MS Dhoni's feat in IPL 2024 Final
Notably, Dhoni won the IPL trophy for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) months after leading India to their historic ODI World Cup trophy in 2011. In fact, Dhoni is the only captain in the world to have won the IPL and the ODI World Cup to date, and now Cummins has the chance to equal his record.
On the other hand, Cummins led Australia to the 2023 ODI World Cup title in India last November, and he will have a chance to achieve a rare milestone when he captains the SRH in the IPL 2024 final. There is a lot of buzz on the social media platforms that Cummins-led SRH would win the trophy.
Actually, the Australian captain was standing left of the IPL trophy during pre-final photoshoots, and in the same position, he was positioned during the World Test Championship final and the ODI World Cup final last year.
On both occasions, Cummins walked away with the coveted prize, leaving many to ponder whether it's a testament to his winning aura and whether it suggests another title for the Aussie star.
Pat Cummins has been on the roll as a captain
Meanwhile, Cummins's recent track record speaks volumes about his leadership prowess, as in the span of just 12 months, he has led Australia to victory in the WTC, the ODI World Cup, and retained the Ashes Urn against England.
Such a remarkable string of successes is a rarity in the modern era, and now if the Australian pacer manages to win the trophy, it will only push Cummins into a league of his generation's most successful captains. However, the journey is not yet complete for Cummins, as he would be eager to deny KKR their third IPL title on Sunday in Chennai.
Notably, Cummins had won the IPL trophy with the KKR in 2014. Analysing SRH’s performance in the IPL 2024, the skipper said at the pre-match press conference: “It's been huge. We have quite an experienced bowling line-up, including Jaydev Unadkat and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Also, so many youngsters have come through and have won us games by themselves, like Nitish Reddy and Abhishek Sharma. We also have guys who have been away from the Indian setup, but they have been fantastic. So, that's been the story of our team.”
