Team India captain Shubman Gill smashed a magnificent double century during the first innings of the second Test in the five-match series against England. The right-handed batter received applause from the cricket fraternity, including former World Cup-winning cricketer Kris Srikkanth, for his knock.
Shubman Gill resumed his overnight score of 114 on Day 2 (July 3) and remained in control throughout the innings. He capitalized on his strong start and anchored India’s innings with maturity. Gill added partnerships with Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, putting pressure on the English bowlers.
He went on to surpass his previous highest Test score, registering his maiden double-century in the format. Gill also recorded the highest individual Test score by an Indian on English soil.
I Was Hoping for a Triple but... - Kris Srikkanth on Shubman Gill
Kris Srikkanth took to social media X (formerly known as Twitter) to praise Shubman Gill for his record-breaking double century. Srikkanth described the 25-year-old’s knock as a special moment in the birthplace of cricket. The former batter also added that he was hoping for a triple century.
"What else is there to say When a player of just 25 years creates history in the land where cricket was born! What a knock, i was hoping for a triple but looking at this young legend play its not too far in the future!" Kris Srikkanth wrote.

Spelling: Gill was aiming for a triple century during the final session on Day 2 but lost his wicket to Shoaib Bashir in the 144th over. With this performance, the 25-year-old has scored 2,317 runs at an average of 40.64, including seven centuries and as many half-centuries.
Shubman Gill Puts India in Command in Second Test vs England
Shubman Gill scored his seventh Test century, playing a pivotal role in putting India in a commanding position during the second Test. After being asked to bat first by Ben Stokes, India capitalized on the flat pitch, posting 587 runs in 151 overs.
Yashasvi Jaiswal (87) and Ravindra Jadeja (89) chipped in with crucial runs. The visitors mounted a strong comeback, especially after lower-order collapses had cost them in the first Test. India were 211/5 on Day 1, but a 203-run stand between Gill and Jadeja steadied the innings.
The momentum continued on Day 2, as Gill added a 144-run partnership with Washington Sundar for the seventh wicket. The collective batting effort ensured that England were pushed onto the back foot heading into their first innings.
England Lose Three Early Wickets After Shubman Gill's Batting Heroics
India’s bowlers made an early impact after a dominant batting performance. Akash Deep, brought in as a replacement for Jasprit Bumrah, struck in just his second over, removing Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope off successive deliveries.
Duckett was caught by Shubman Gill at third slip, while Pope was taken at second slip while playing across the line. Mohammed Siraj then added to England’s woes by dismissing Zak Crawley for 19, leaving the hosts in deep trouble at 25/3 within the first eight overs.
However, Joe Root and Harry Brook steadied the innings, ensuring no further damage before stumps. The duo took England to 77/3 at the end of Day 2, with Root unbeaten on 18 and Brook on 30.
