Delhi Capitals, on Tuesday (December 19), signed up Kumar Kushagra in the ongoing IPL auction 2024. The 19-year-old uncapped player had registered himself at a base price of Rs 20 lakhs.
While Chennai Super Kings began the bidding process, Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals soon took the lead for the wicketkeeper-batsman. Both the franchises were desperate to sign the youngster as the bidding crossed the 7 crores mark. In the end, Delhi Capitals signed Kumar Kushagra for Rs 7.20 crores.
Kumar Kushagra is a wicketkeeper-batsman from Jharkhand and will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of two of the most wicketkeepers from his state – legendary MS Dhoni and current India star Ishan Kishan. At the age of just 19, he has already played first-class, List A, and T20 cricket for Jharkhand. He has 1 century and 4 half-centuries in 13 first-class games and 7 half-centuries in 23 List-A games.
Earlier this year, he showcased his immense potential by powering Jharkhand to a miraculous win over Maharashtra in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Batting at No.6, he smashed an unbeaten 67 off just 37 balls with the help of four fours and five sixes to help his team chase down 355. According to reports, a number of scouts were watching that game and were very impressed by Kumar Kushagra’s big-hitting abilities.
