The decision to leave out Jasprit Bumrah from India's playing 11 for the second Test at Birmingham has caught the attention of several stars like Kumar Sangakkara. Earlier, the likes of Ravi Shastri and Dale Steyn came forward to criticize this decision.
However, Gautam Gambhir, who was stubborn about abiding by the plan of playing Bumrah in only three of the games, as decided before the onset of the India vs England Test series. They have rested Jasprit Bumrah in order to find him fit for the Lord's Test.
However, Sangakkara points out that what is more crucial from the team's point of view? Is it surviving in the series after lagging 1-0 against England or winning the Lord's Test? If survival is a concern, then Jasprit Bumrah should have featured in the second test match.
Kumar Sangakkara dismisses Gambhir's ideology for the Edgbaston Test
“Interesting to understand how the decision is being made and who makes it? Is it after a consultation with the players or the physios? It depends on whether the Lord’s Test is more important than the series?" Kumar Sangakkara raised the vital question on Sky Sports.
"The series is on the line. If we see the score, it’s an even day, perhaps a little bit more tilted towards England with the five wickets down."
"So I would have expected the coach to have gone to Bumrah and say ‘Yes, we thought you might play the 3rd and the 5th Test, but we’re going 1 and 2. Take a look if you can play the third if you can, because then you’ve got two weeks off before the next one,” answered Sangakkara.
Kumar Sangakkara also feels Gambhir has to carry the baggage of 7 Test losses since September 2024.
After Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ravindra Jadeja missed out on a hundred at Edgbaston

However, other than the Indian skipper, the opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has also delivered with the bat, giving India a good start on Day 1. However, after a good start, Jaiswal was dismissed for 87 runs.
Next, after India's fall of wickets, Ravindra Jadeja, who came in to bat at no. 7 for India, put on a staggering partnership with skipper Gill and batted almost through to lunch on Day 2.
