Kumar Sangakkara, Team Director of the Rajasthan Royals (RR), picked 3 youngsters from the Royals who he believes have a bright future.

The Royals are at the fifth position on the points table before the IPL 2021 was suspended last week. Despite losing overseas stars one by one, the Sanju Samson-led outfit has done really well to bag 3 wins in 7 games.

In a webinar hosted by the Royals, Kumar Sangakkara was asked to name three emerging players who have the potential to flourish in the future.

The former Sri Lankan captain promptly picked Chetan Sakariya as the first one. The 23-year-old played all 7 matches of the season so far and picked 7 wickets at a decent economy of 8.22, and was largely impressive for swing with the new ball and with his variations in the later phase of the game.

Kumar Sangakkara further named Anuj Rawat and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Rawat, a 21-year-old batsman from Uttarakhand, could feature in a solitary game where he didn’t got the chance to bat. On the other hand, Jaiswal, a renowned prodigy, was impressive while opening alongside Jos Buttler.

“Chetan [Sakariya] was a revelation, his attitude, his ability to deal with pressure, and of course, his kill. We had Anuj [Rawat] and Yash [Jaiswal], the two youngsters who have been with the franchise for a very, very long time. And I was thoroughly impressed by all three of them,” Kumar Sangakkara said.

“They actually got a reasonable amount of time in the middle. Unfortunately, in the match that Anuj came into [the side against SRH], he didn’t get a chance to bat but was outstanding with his energy and skill in the field,” he added.

The legendary batsman also heaped praise on Riyan Parag. The 19-year-old from Assam has shown glimpses of his talent with the bat and in the field – and he can bowl some handy spin as well – in the 3 seasons he has been at the Royals.

Kumar Sangakkara believes that Parag will contribute significantly to Indian cricket, but his talent needs care and nurturing to develop further.

“For us, Riyan Parag is a very, very special player, I think he’s got a huge amount to contribute to not just Royals, but also to Indian cricket in future. A very special talent that needs care, nurturing, and development,” the 43-year-old stated.
