South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne threw away his wicket with a poor shot during the second innings of the first Test against India at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Left-arm spinner Axar Patel picked up his first wicket of the innings on Day 2 (Saturday, November 15) amid South Africa’s batting collapse.

India were dismissed for 189 earlier in the day. The hosts took only a 30-run lead after the first innings of the two teams. Simon Harmer was the pick of the bowlers for the Proteas, with four wickets, while Marco Jansen added three more. With Shubman Gill unavailable, vice-captain Rishabh Pant is leading India.

Axar, bowling a straight and fuller delivery from around the wicket, got the ball to angle in as Verreynne went down on one knee for the sweep.

The dismissal left captain Temba Bavuma visibly frustrated as Kyle Verreynne walked back dejectedly after scoring just nine runs. Meanwhile, Axar celebrated his first wicket of the innings, tightening India’s grip as South Africa’s collapse deepened.

Kyle Verreynne Dismissed for 9 Runs in South Africa’s Second Innings

Kyle Verreynne departed after scoring 9 runs off 16 balls. The right-handed batter’s dismissal left the Proteas reeling at 75/6 after 27.5 overs. Marco Jansen was the seventh batter to fall in South Africa’s second innings. Jansen scored 13 runs off 16 balls before being dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav.

The visiting team were 93/7 in 35 overs at stumps on the second day. They are currently leading by 63 runs, with Temba Bavuma (29) and Corbin Bosch (1) at the crease. Ravindra Jadeja picked up four wickets for the home team. Kuldeep Yadav bagged two wickets, while Axar Patel took one scalp.

The Proteas will need to perform well in the first session on the third day to post a competitive target. A loss in the match could impact the World Test Championship standings as well.

South Africa Bowled Out for 159 Runs in First Innings

Earlier on Day 1, South Africa were bundled out for just 159 runs in 55 overs. Jasprit Bumrah picked up a five-wicket haul, while Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav chipped in with two wickets each to dismantle the visitors.

The Proteas got off to a promising start with a 57-run opening stand between Aiden Markram (31) and Ryan Rickelton (23). Bumrah broke the partnership and dismissed both openers in consecutive overs. Kuldeep Yadav removed Wiaan Mulder (24) and skipper Temba Bavuma (3).

From 71/3, South Africa’s middle and lower order offered little resistance as India took full control of the contest. The Men in Blue will aim to maintain their dominant home record, having beaten South Africa 3-0 in each of the last two Test series and remaining unbeaten against them in India since 2010.
