Veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Mahmudullah achieved an unwanted record during the Super Eight match against Australia in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Mahmudullah has been involved in the most number of hat-tricks across all teams in the three formats of the game in international cricket.

The Mitchell Marsh-led team secured a 28-run victory over Bangladesh via the DLS method at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Friday, June 21 (India time). The Australia team moved to the top place in the Group 1 table in the Super 8 stage. Bangladesh is at the bottom of the table with a net run rate (NRR) of -2.471.

Mitchell Marsh opted to bowl first after winning the toss. Left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc provided an early breakthrough for his team by dismissing opener Tanzid Hasan for a three-ball duck in his first over. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and Litton Das struggled to challenge Australia significantly during the match.

Litton Das scored 16 runs off 25 balls before being dismissed by Adam Zampa in the ninth over. Najmul Shanto (41 runs off 36 balls) and Towhid Hridoy (40 off 28) chipped in with useful contributions with the bat. Shakib Al Hasan was dismissed for eight runs off 10 balls, leaving Bangladesh at 103-5 in 16.1 overs.

Pat Cummins picked up a hat-trick in the final overs of Bangladesh's batting innings. Cummins took the wickets of Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan, and Towhid Hridoy across the 18th and 20th overs of the match. Mahmudullah was bowled by Cummins on the penultimate ball of the 18th over during the first innings.

Mahedi Hasan was dismissed for a golden duck on the final ball of the 18th over. Cummins completed his hat-trick by dismissing Towhid Hridoy on the first ball of the 20th over. The 31-year-old pacer became the seventh Australian bowler and seventh overall to bag a hat-trick in the history of the T20 World Cup.
