Meg Lanning will captain Australia at the T20 World Cup in South Africa, while Georgia Wareham will make her long-awaited return.

Cricket Australia is hopeful that Alyssa Healy, the wicketkeeper and now vice-captain, will recover from the calf injury that has kept her out of the home ODIs against Pakistan.

Meg Lanning, Ellyse Perry, and a recovered Alyssa Healy are the core of Australia’s star-studded team that was selected on Tuesday to defend their women’s Twenty20 World Cup championship.

The five-time champions are strong favorites to win the tournament in South Africa next month, and the addition of leg-spinner Georgia Wareham to their ranks after a protracted injury-related absence has only strengthened their position.

Although wicketkeeper Healy has been battling a calf injury sustained in India in December, she was also chosen to the 15-woman team and is set to compete.

In front of more than 86,000 spectators, Australia defeated India by 85 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to win the T20 World Cup in 2020.

Meg Lanning is back in charge of the team after an indefinite months-long break:

Meg Lanning takes over as captain after returning after an indeterminate months-long hiatus late last month, putting to rest speculation that she had played her final international match.

The record-breaking 30-year-old announced her break from the game in August to “concentrate on me” after leading Australia to a flurry of victories.

“It’s always tough to narrow a squad down to just 15 players, but we’re confident we’ve picked a well-balanced side, Seeing Meg Lanning and Georgia back in action for Victoria has been exciting. Both bring a wealth of experience to the group, which is always crucial during major tournaments” said national selector Shawn Flegler.

“Georgia in particular has had a tough run of injuries, but she’s shown a great deal of resilience and her return is a real boost for the side” Shawn Flegler Added.

On February 12, Australia will face New Zealand to open their World Cup defense before playing South Africa, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka in group play.
