Mumbai Indians (MI)suffered a poor loss to Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Tuesday (6th May). This now gives them a scare in terms of qualification for the playoffs, as they will have to bring their best in the rest of their games.
Mumbai Indians (MI) faced a poor three-wicket loss against Gujarat Titans. The 56th game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 between the teams took place at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where a thrilling encounter was witnessed between the two top teams of the tournament.
Gujarat Titans beat Mumbai Indians by three wickets
Asked to bat, Mumbai Indians had a poor start to their innings as both the in-form openers in Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma, got out early. They were at 26 for two when Will Jacks (53) and Suryakumar Yadav (35) brought their team back into the game.
The Jacks-Yadav duo added 71 runs for the third wicket as Mumbai Indians were at the top. However, after that, they faced a terrible collapse as Gujarat Titans bowlers were all over them and reduced them to 123 for seven from 97 for two.
Corbin Bosch (27) hit some blows at the end that powered Mumbai Indians to a total of 155 for eight. For the Gujarat Titans, Sai Kishore was the pick of the bowlers as he bagged two wickets.
Chasing the target, Gujarat Titans lost Sai Sudharsan early for just five runs. But, after that, Shubman Gill (43) and Jos Buttler (30) batted brilliantly with rain around the corner. They played the situation perfectly and added 72 runs for the second wicket.
Sherfane Rutherford (28) also played a vital hand that kept Gujarat Titans ahead in the game. However, the rain break changed things for Mumbai Indians as experienced campaigners Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult brought their team back into the game with quick wickets.
There was another rain break after that, and the game was reduced to 19 overs, with the Gujarat Titans needing 15 runs. Rahul Tewatia (11*) hit a boundary on the first ball before Gerald Coetzee (12) hit six on the third delivery. The game went down to the last over, and it was Gujarat who chased the target with three wickets.
Here's how the Mumbai Indians (MI) can qualify for the IPL 2025 playoffs
After the game against the Gujarat Titans, the Mumbai Indians lost their 5th game of the season. They now have 7 wins from the 12 games with 14 points under their belt. However, to qualify now for the playoffs, they need to bring their best.
Considering the fact that a team needs 16 points to qualify, Mumbai Indians need to win one of their two games in the tournament. As they have a healthy NRR, they might qualify if they win their next one game, as it will take them to 16 points. If they win both their games, they will surely qualify and can finish in the top 2.
However, if they lose both their games, then things might be difficult for them as they might miss out on a place in the playoffs. They might have an outside chance, but it will all depend on the NRR and the results of other games.
Next matches of the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2025
