Mumbai Indians (MI), on Monday (May 6), thrashed Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by seven wickets to get back to winning ways in the ongoing IPL 2024. After suffering a 24-run loss against Kolkata Knight Riders in their previous game, the five-time champions bounced back in style to win the game against Sunrisers.

Asked to bat first, the Hyderabad-based outfit finished their innings on 173 for 8. Opener Travis Head once again top-scored for them, scoring 48 runs off 30 balls with the help of seven fours and one six. Captain Pat Cummins also played a crucial cameo of 35 runs from 17 balls to take his team to a 170-plus total.

In reply, MI chased down the total inside 18 overs by losing just three wickets thanks to an unbeaten century from Suryakumar Yadav. The right-handed batsman scored an unbeaten 102 runs from 51 balls to take his team home. MI were reeling at 31 for 3 at one stage before Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma (32*) shared an unbeaten 142-run stand.

MI, SRH qualification scenario:

Mumbai Indians have kept their slim playoffs chances alive with the win against Sunrisers Hyderabad. With 4 wins from 12 games, they are currently languishing at the ninth spot in the IPL 2024 points table. While their chances of making it to the next stage are extremely low, they are still mathematically alive in the competition.

MI can finish their campaign with a maximum of 12 points if they win their remaining two league games. Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders already have 16 points so MI won't be able to catch up wit them. At present, three teams - Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants and SRH - are on 12 points each.

To qualify for the playoffs, the Mumbai-based outfit will need at least two of these teams to lose their remaining matches, so that they do not finish above 12 points. Mumbai will also be hoping that the teams who are in the bottom half of the points table do not cross the 12-point mark.

Even if MI manage to finish on 12 points, they are not guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. If more than one team finish with 12 points, their fate will be decided by net run-rate.

SRH, on the other hand, have six wins from 11 games and they are at the fourth spot. They will be easily qualifying for the playoffs if they manage to win their remaining three games which will see them finish the league stage with 18 points. Their net run-rate has taken a beating after the loss against Mumbai and they will be desperate to return to winning ways to make it to the next round.
