Former New Zealand cricketers Mitchell McClenaghan and Scott Styris engaged in a heated Twitter exchange following Mumbai Indians’ loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore in their IPL opener.

Royal Challengers Bangalore made a fantastic start to their IPL season with an eight-wicket demolition of Mumbai Indians on Sunday, thanks to a 148-run opening stand between Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis.

Two cricketers from New Zealand, Mitchell McClenaghan and Scott Styris, have recently been messing around on Twitter. Both players have played for two of the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) most prosperous teams, the Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, respectively.

On Sunday, April 2, MI lost their IPL season opener to the Royal Challengers Bangalore by an eight-wicket margin. McClenghan chose to see the bright side by reminding Mumbai supporters that their team had won five IPL championships despite losing their first game in each of those tournaments.

Mitchell McClenaghan and Scott Styris got into a heated Twitter debate:

Former MI player Mitchell McClenaghan got into a heated Twitter dispute with Scott Styris in response to the recent results.

“Positive Note. @mipaltan have never won a championship after winning the first game. Second Positive in general. How good is it to see games being played in Home grounds! Love it @IPL is back!” Mitchell McClenaghan Tweeted.

Styris responded to Mitchell McClenaghan with a wry smile. The Mumbai Indians lost their opening game last season as well, and they came in dead last in the standings, he reminded the left-arm pacer. The formerly versatile player tweeted: “Another positive note… Mumbai has also finished last when they didn’t win their first match”

But the former MI player had the last laugh, telling Styris, “On another positive note – Mumbai beat CSK in the final on two occasions and on a third occasion beat CSK dressed as Pune,” he added.

In 16.2 overs against MI, RCB reached 172/2 after setting a target of 172 runs. Virat Kohli, who was in excellent form, scored an unbroken 82 runs off 49 balls. RCB captain Du Plessis, meanwhile, scored 73 runs off of 43 deliveries. With Tilak Varma smashing an unbeaten 84 runs off 46 balls, MI first reached 171/7 in 20 overs. Karn Sharma, who bowled well for RCB, took two wickets.
