The 51st match of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) got underway at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Friday, May 3.
Heading into the match, the Shreyas Iyer-led side are sitting pretty at the number 2 position on the Indian Premier League 2024 points table with a solid Net Run Rate of 1.096. Out of 9 games, they have won 6 and have 12 points in their bag.
Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, have had an opposite campaign to that of Kolkata Knight Riders. Their batting and bowling unit has failed to perform consistently which has resulted in the team losing back-to-back matches that too in an embarrassing manner.
Of 10 matches they have played, MI have emerged victorious only in three of them. The 5-time champions have just 6 points in their bag which puts the team in the 9th position on the points table, only above Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
KKR will be entering the match against MI with a lot of momentum as they defeated Delhi Capitals in their previous match at the Eden Gardens by 7 wickets and 27 balls remaining. The mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy was the most valuable player of the team as he bowled an exceptional spell of 3/16 to restrict DC to 153/9.
Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, lost against Lucknow Super Giants in their last match in Lucknow by 4 wickets. Their batting unit failed miserably as they just scored 144/7 and despite bowlers' best efforts, LSG won the match comfortably.
Who are the impact players nominated by MI and KKR for match 51 of IPL 2024?
Mumbai Indians won the toss and chose to bowl first in the match. They made one significant change by bringing in Naman Dhir for Mohammad Nabi. Hardik Pandya said:
"We will bowl. It's always about playing for pride, it looks quite tough for us but at the same time, we want to play good cricket. Looks like a good track, it's a fresh wicket so thought that bowling first will be good. Only one change, Naman Dhir comes in place of Nabi."
KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer said that they want to do small things right and revealed that they haven't made any changes. He said:
"It's always about doing the small things well, obviously the dew is a factor but we have to keep that out of mind. The message is clear, each one of them knows their role and responsibility. Batting first we are going with the same team."
