Pat Cummins-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) played an away encounter against the Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 55th match of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) on Monday, May 6, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Batting first in the match, Sunrisers Hyderabad finished their innings with a total of 173/8 on the board with Travis Head (48) and Pat Cummins (35) being the top two run-getters. Nitish Reddy, Marco Jansen, and Shahbaz Ahmed also chipped in with crucial runs in the innings.
Defending the target, SRH were off to a great start as they dismissed Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Naman Dhir inside 4.1 overs. However, after that, nothing went in their favor as Suryakumar Yadav hit a fantastic century and steered Mumbai Indians to a 7-wicket victory.
Speaking after the match, Pat Cummins said that they were a few runs short in the match and should have scored more. Pat Cummins said:
"Probably a couple short, at the Wankhede you want as many as you can get. You always feel like you’re in, the wicket had a little bit in it so we were definitely in the game."
Pat Cummins felt that things didn't work out for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the match and showered rich praise on Suryakumar Yadav for his batting brilliance. Pat Cummins said:
"I think Sanvir helped us get to that 170 instead of 150, ideally, we’d have a bowler. It’s T20 cricket, and it doesn't always work out. SKY played really well. We like playing at home, we’ll wait and see what’s ahead of us. Hopefully a few more fireworks."
SRH vs MI Previous Meeting Result
In their first clash in the Indian Premier League 2024, SRH and MI produced a run-fest on March 27 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad. After a normal start to IPL 2024 with 3 200-plus totals in 14 innings, with a highest of 208, SRH decided to raise the bar and showcased what the IPL 2024 is all about - a nightmare for bowlers.
Travis Head (62), Abhishek Sharma (63), Aiden Markram (42), and Heinrich Klaasen (80) decided to go all guns blazing and after a stupendous batting show, they took SRH all the way to 277 for 3. For MI, Hardik Pandya Piyush Chawla, and Gerald Coetzee were among the wickets while Jasprit Bumrah (0/36) was the most economical.
A total that was virtually impossible to chase was made look chaseable when Mumbai Indians came to bat. The 5-time champions reached the halfway mark with a great run rate with the batters playing an attacking brand of cricket.
However, SRH bowlers made sure that they didn't let the performance of their batters go in vain and pulled back the game to restrict Mumbai to 246/5 and clinch a 31-run victory. For SRH, Pat Cummins and Jaydev Unadkat picked up two wickets each while Shahbaz Ahmed got one wicket. In the high-scoring match, the young SRH batsman Abhishek Sharma bagged the Player of the Match award for his heroics of 23-ball 63.
