Former England skipper Michael Vaughan has backed his former England teammate and ex-captain Andrew Strauss to become the next Chairman of the ECB. England lost the Ashes series and the ECB is looking for a revamp in the management. It is awaiting the report of the managing director of England’s cricket team Ashley Giles to start their planning on the same.

Andrew Struss is currently serving as the Chairman of the ECB’s cricket committee. He will take an action on the future of Joe Root and Chris Silverwood based on the report submitted by Giles. However, many former cricket experts including Kevin Pietersen is against the removal of the coach and the captain.

He Commands Respect: Michael Vaughan on Andrew Strauss

“Andrew Strauss would make a great chairman of the ECB. I think he is the person to drive through change. He was here four years ago and, after another 4-0 defeat to Australia, he wrote a report saying we need better pitches, and a different ball in county cricket. Nothing happened, possibly because he left soon after the tour. He commands respect, and knows exactly what is required. No county chairman would look at Strauss and say: ‘Sorry, I disagree with your views on red ball cricket,” Vaughan told the Telegraph.

Michael Vaughan drew similarities between England’s 2015 World Cup debacle and the current Ashes series loss. He said that the red-ball game of the team needs to be looked at given the consistent failures of the players since the India series in India.

“He (Strauss) knows what needs to happen, and that enough is enough. The line in the sand with our white ball cricket was the 2015 World Cup and this is the moment for red ball cricket,” Vaughan said.

Another former England skipper Michael Atherton also believes that there is no one better than Andrew Struss to take charge as the next ECB chairman and clean up the mess in the current England Test setup.

“Harrison is in the final stretch of a seven-year stint as chief executive, and is expected to leave within the next 12 months. Strauss is exceptionally capable and should be persuaded to take the job when Harrison goes. No one in English cricket is better qualified,” Atherton wrote in the Times.
