Michael Vaughan Pays Tribute After Joe Root Steps Down As England's Test Captain
Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan called Joe Root a role model after the latter’s captaincy stint came to an end when he resigned from the post on Friday.
Root relinquished Test captaincy and his final game will be the loss to West Indies. As the captain of the side, Root holds the record for most matches (64), most wins (27), and also most runs (5,295).
Congratulating Root on a successful stint, Vaughan said Root will continue to be a role model and there is a lot more for him to achieve as a batter in the Test side.
“He gave it everything with very little support for the Red ball team under his watch .. then he had to deal with Covid times .. he still is and will the games best role model for many many years .. now enjoy being the senior player for many more seasons @root66,” Vaughan tweeted.
“It has been the most challenging decision I have had to make in my career” – Joe Root
Root had said that the time had come and it was a decision he made after discussing it with his close friends and family. He is just 31 years of age and has a lot to look forward to in his Test career.
“It has been the most challenging decision I have had to make in my career but having discussed this with my family and those closest to me; I know the timing is right. I am immensely proud to have captained my country and will look back on the past five years with enormous pride.”
“It has been an honour to have done the job and to have been a custodian of what is the pinnacle of English cricket. I have loved leading my country, but recently it’s hit home how much of a toll it has taken on me and the impact it has had on me away from the game,” Root stated.
