Mitchell Owen Makes Dream Australia Debut
The Tasmanian and Hobart Hurricanes all-rounder Owen went from a middle-order player with a middling domestic record to an explosive T20 opener.
He gained fame with his sensational performance in the BBL 2024-25 final against the Sydney Thunder as he struck an exceptional 108 runs off 42 balls to help his team lift the title.
His BBL heroics helped him get attention from several franchises across the globe and he soon got a Pakistan Super League (PSL) contract from Peshawar Zalmi, a SA20 deal from Paarl Royals, a Major League Cricket (MLC) deal from Washington Freedom, and the biggest one - an Indian Premier League (IPL) contract from Punjab Kings.
That was not it as the Australia National Cricket Team selectors were also highly impressed with Mitchell Owen and handed him his debut cap in the first T20I of the five-match series against the Men In Maroon in the absence of several superstar players.
Mitchell Owen Bags Player Of The Match Award
Owen bowled one over in the match and picked up a massive wicket of the West Indies National Cricket Team skipper Shai Hope, who scored 55, returning with figures of 1/14.
Then, with the bat, Owen brought out his beast mode during the run-chase of 190. He smashed a blazing 50 runs off 27 balls and became just the third Australian to hit a fifty on T20I debut after Ricky Ponting and David Warner.
Also, his innings was studded with 6 sixes and with this, he equalled David Warner's record for most sixes by a batter on T20I debut among Full Member Nations.
Owen was handed the Player of the Match award for his heroics, and the Australia National Cricket Team clinched a 3-wicket win to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Nice to join those great names - Mitchell Owen
Speaking after winning the Player of the Match during the post-match presentation ceremony, Mitchell Owen said that he was absolutely delighted with the way things panned out and was thrilled to join Ricky Ponting and David Miller in the elite list. He elaborated:
"(on debut) Happy to have the win, nice to contribute. Nice to join those great names (of David Warner and Ricky Ponting - players who got 50s on T20I debut).
"(On his batting) For me, it was about trying to play positively and put the pressure back on the bowlers. Great to bat with Greeny, kept me nice and calm. First time batting with him.
"(On batting in the middle order) Not too much changed, I wanted to go out and hit a six first, swing hard and work it from there."
