Sarfaraz Ahmed is likely to be the new head of the Pakistan cricket team for the Test format. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is yet to make an official announcement regarding this. Before that, the cricket experts of the nation were in splits as soon as the report related to Sarfaraz and the Pakistan Test team broke out.
Amid the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, the Pakistan Cricket Board is reportedly considering some massive steps to reform the national team. During a debate, former international pacer Mohammad Amir opposed Sarfaraz Ahmed as the head coach of the national team.
Pakistan Cricket Board set to appoint Sarfaraz Ahmed as the head coach
Only a few days after Pakistan's elimination from the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, it was widely reported that Sarfaraz Ahmed, the former skipper of the Pakistan National Cricket Team, who has achieved a significant amount of success with the U-19 team as the mentor, is all set to be appointed as the head coach of the senior cricket team for the Test format.
Theoretically, it sounds very exciting, but the reality can be different, and that can be damaging for the senior cricket team, Mohammad Amir emphasizes during the live debate.
Mohammad Amir warned Sarfaraz and the Pakistan Cricket Board
The former Pakistan pacer claims that he has a good relationship with Sarfaraz Ahmed, and they often talk to each other. There is no doubt that Sarfaraz did a pretty good job with the U-19 team. But, in a quick move, appointing the former skipper as the Test team head coach can prove fatal for the national cricket team, as well as for Sarfaraz.
"He is the winning captain. I respect him a lot. We talk to each other a lot. I told you earlier that he is working at the under-19 level. This is a very good thing. He will learn from the experience here. Suddenly, the coach of the Pakistan team, the head coach! It's not good for him and it's not good for Pakistan cricket as well", Mohammad Amir expressed his assessment.

"Saifi bhai is very close to me. He’s currently working with U-19 team & gaining experience. Appointing him as Test coach all of a sudden wouldn’t be good for him & for Pakistan cricket".

Since last year, the head coach position of Pakistan's Test team has been vacant. Pakistan's previous Test series, which was against South Africa at home, ended in a draw with former cricketer Azhar Mahmood as the interim coach.
Babar Azam is kicked out of the ODI team
Now, as the team is out of the T20 World Cup 2026 title contention, the PCB seems to shift its focus to the longest format of the game. Though Sarfaraz Ahmed, as the head coach of the Pakistan Test team, remains a speculation, nothing has been officially confirmed yet.
If things go according to plan, then Ahmed can make debut as the head coach in Test cricket during Pakistan's tour to Bangladesh.
In a separate development, PCB pushed Babar Azam and Saim Ayub from their ODI squad for the Bangladesh tour. Shaheen Afridi is named as the captain of the ODI squad.
