Former India skipper Mohammad Azharuddin has backed the newly appointed ODI captain of the Indian team, Rohit Sharma, saying that the Mumbaikar has the true ability to lead the team well. He also congratulated him for becoming the leader of the 50-over team as well.
On December 8, 2021, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Twitter that going forward Rohit Sharma will be the captain of the Indian team in ODIs and T20Is. They later also tweeted to thank Virat Kohli for his contribution as the captain of the Indian team during his tenure from 2017-2021.

There Are Big Hopes From India???s New ODI And T20 Captain Rohit Sharma: Mohammad Azharuddin
Virat Kohli had already stepped down as the captain of the Indian T20I team after the T20 World Cup 2021 but had confirmed interest in leading the ODI and Test teams in the future, especially keeping an eye on the 2023 World Cup which will be played in India itself.
However, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly revealed that the board had requested Kohli not to quit as T20I captain, but after he did so, the selection panel didn???t feel it right with having two white-ball captains and hence decided to hand over the ODI and T20I captaincy to Rohit Sharma, bringing an end to Virat Kohli???s tenure.
Many fans and cricket pundits were not happy with the way Virat Kohli was removed as the ODI captain, but others pointed out that it was a sensible decision as there couldn???t have been two people captaining in ODIs and T20Is and the fact that Kohli didn???t win a single ICC trophy during his time as India white-ball captain, went against him.

Rohit Sharma, on the other hand, has won the 2018 Asia Cup without Kohli in the team and then led India to the 2018 Nidahas T20 Trophy win in Sri Lanka. Apart from that, his five IPL title wins for Mumbai Indians make him one of the best captains in shorter formats.
Taking to social media platform Koo, Azharuddin congratulated Rohit on being handed the leadership mantle in limited-overs internationals and praised the veteran opener???s ability as a captain.
???There are big hopes for India???s new ODI and T20 captain Rohit Sharma after Virat Kohli. And he has the true ability to lead the team like he had promised. Congratulations to the new captain,??? Azharuddin wrote in Hindi on his Koo account.
