Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have pulled off one of the boldest trades of the window ahead of the IPL 2026 auction next month in Abu Dhabi. In a stunning development, the Lucknow Super Giants traded in the star pacer Mohammed Shami from Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on November 14.
Mohammed Shami is now all set to join Rishabh Pant at the LSG for the next season. The Indian bowler, who is known for his lethal seam movement, sharp accuracy, and unmatched ability to strike with the new ball, brings world-class firepower to the LSG.
Mohammed Shami joins LSG ahead of IPL 2026
Shami will play under Rishabh Pant’s captaincy in the IPL 2026. The LSG confirmed the news with a cryptic post where they didn’t mention Shami but shared a picture from the India-England match, where the veteran Indian bowler clean bowled Ben Stokes.
Sharing Stokes’ picture, the franchise wrote in the caption, “Just thinking about this Ekana moment for no reason 🤭.”

However, the LSG have not made an official announcement about trading Shami from the SRH, and neither have disclosed what type of deal they finalized.
LSG set to pay full INR 10 Crore to land Mohammed Shami
But ESPNCricinfo claimed that the Lucknow franchise is set to pay Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) a full INR 10 crore—the exact amount Mohammed Shami was originally bought for at the IPL 2025 mega auction—in the blockbuster deal.
The IPL has set a 3 pm deadline on November 15 for all teams to submit their retained and released players ahead of the auction. The SRH had invested heavily in Shami ahead of IPL 2025 after his brilliant performance in the powerplay with the Titans between 2022 and 2024.
The veteran Indian bowler scalped 28 wickets in the powerplay in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. However, Shami entirely missed the 2024 season, and then his return in IPL 2025 did not go to plan. Shami struggled to regain his rhythm, finishing with only five wickets in nine innings and leaking runs at an economy rate of 10.3 in the powerplay for the SRH.
Now, Shami is set to reunite with former India bowling coach Bharat Arun at the LSG. Arun, who now leads LSG’s talent development program, was a key figure in building India’s dominant fast-bowling group over the past decade, involving Shami himself, along with Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, and Mohammed Siraj.
Dale Steyn wanted Mohammed Shami at SRH long ago, now warns franchise against letting him go
Earlier, former South African pace great Dale Steyn revealed that he once “begged” for Shami's inclusion when he served as Sunrisers Hyderabad's bowling coach, but his request was ignored. However, Steyn urged the SRH not to part ways with the Indian bowler ahead of the next season.
Steyn said on JioStar, “When I was the bowling coach of SRH, I said, ‘Please, can we somehow get Mohammed Shami?’” And the moment I wasn't the coach, they got him. I would be disappointed if they lost him. Fitness and form play a key role in the IPL, especially with bowlers. You want bowlers to be fit, and you want them to fire. If Shami is fit and firing, he will make any team. But if he's struggling… teams would say there are other players. You were good a year and a half ago, but not right now. That release might happen.”
