Mohsin Naqvi unlikely to get another term as ACC chairman after Asia Cup trophy controversy

Mohsin Naqvi left the ground without handing over the Women’s Asia Cup Trophy to India. His tenure as Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president will come to an end in April 2027, and he is unlikely to be selected as the new president for the forthcoming term, given the controversial things that have been happening due to the bitter relationship between India and Pakistan.

Mohsin Naqvi has once again been under the radar of controversy, as he appeared during the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 final between the India Women’s National Cricket Team and the Sri Lanka Women’s National Cricket Team at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai. Harmanpreet Kaur’s side refused to take the trophy from the ACC president, citing the cold relationship.

As per reports from PTI, Mohsin Naqvi's tenure as chairman of the ACC ends in April 2027, which is roughly another 7 months. There is a provision for extension, but an extension for him is unlikely to happen, as he will not get a vote of support from the rest of the board members.

As of now, BCCI is also unlikely to do anything; it is believed that Naqvi certainly will not get another term, and he won't get any support from other ACC members, due to the worsening of the relationship between India and Pakistan, which has affected the reputation of the ACC. Naqvi is also the chief of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which has caused the controversy.

What happened between India and Mohsin Naqvi?

The incident started back in the 2025 Men’s Asia Cup when the India National Cricket Team refused to take the trophy from Naqvi after the Pahalgam terror attack, where several Indian citizens were killed. Then the PCB chief took the trophy back with him without handing it over to the champion team. It caused backlash against the PCB chief.

Now, after Harmanpreet Kaur’s side won the trophy by beating Sri Lanka in the final, a similar thing happened, as the BCCI instructed its women’s team not to collect the trophy from the hands of the ACC president. This saw yet another controversy as the post-match presentation did not happen and players were not handed the medals and the trophy, as it was taken away by the ACC chief.

ACC clears its stance on trophy collection

There has been a cold relationship between India and Pakistan has worsened after the Pahalgam attack, as in Asia Cup 2025, the customary toss handshakes between the two captains stopped, and the post-match handshakes as well. Later, it was added to all the cricket groups, from U-19 to Women’s.

Due to the bitter relationship between the two neighbouring countries, the bilateral series has also stopped taking place after 2013. They now only face each other in major tournaments, in which India has an upper hand in recent times across ODIs and T20Is.

The ACC has reportedly made it clear that the trophy remains available for the Indian team to collect, but they can only receive it from Moshin Naqvi.
