According to a latest report, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are yet to finalize their retention list ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction. MS Dhoni will soon link up with top decision-makers to finalise the retention list.

The Indian Premier League 2026 auction will reportedly be held in the December 13-15 window and there is a high possibility of the event being held in India.

CSK set to release big names?

A report was recently published in Cricbuzz, which claimed that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are looking to release some big names from the squad. It was mentioned that the five-time champions will let go of star players to enter the auction with a big purse.

The names of batter Deepak Hooda, all-rounder Vijay Shankar, batter Rahul Tripathi, all-rounder Sam Curran, and opener Devon Conway were floated as a part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) release list

However, the franchise quickly took to X to share cryptic posts to shut down the reports. CSK shared a post which read, “Don't worry, we've updated the bio," and their new bio reads, "Nothing's official till you see it here."

MS Dhoni, Stephen Fleming, and Ruturaj Gaikwad to hold a meeting

According to the latest report in Cricbuzz, CSK haven't even discussed in-house regarding the retention and release of the players from the squad. A high-profile meeting will be held between MS Dhoni, Stephen Fleming, and Ruturaj Gaikwad to finalize the retention list.

Also, a CSK official has stated that they are waiting to get updates from the IPL governing council regarding the dates for the auction and submission of the list of retained players.

He further stated that N Srinivasan will have a final say on the cricketing matters. Also, the Chennai Super Kings are unlikely to make any changes to their coaching staff as Srinivasan “doesn’t like chopping and changing, and is in favour of having stability”.

“See, we haven’t discussed it in-house yet,” a CSK official told RevSportz. “MS has just returned from the US. Fleming is in New Zealand, and the IPL hasn’t even given the date regarding the submission of the list of retained players. Fleming, MS, and Ruturaj will have a meeting to draw up the list. Then it will be taken to Mr Srinivasan for his approval.”

There are a few left-arm spinners, but off-spinners are in short supply - CSK official

Ravichandran Ashwin has already announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League, which adds INR 9.75 crore to their purse. However, Chennai Super Kings will find it hard to replace the veteran off-spinner and might look at overseas options.

“There are a few left-arm spinners, but off-spinners are in short supply,” the official said. “We did our scouting at the TNPL and the junior level, there are a few who bowl off-spin, but getting that quality is very difficult. And in a mini-auction, it’s very unlikely that you will get top quality. Franchises will hardly release the top Indian players.”

Notably, Chennai Super Kings ended their Indian Premier League 2025 campaign in the tenth position on the points table. They won just four and lost 10 matches in the season and had a Net Run Rate of -0.647. It was the first time the Chennai Super Kings finished at the bottom of the points table.
