Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir recently revealed the only regret from his cricketing career. Gautam Gambhir admitted that he wished he had stayed until the end and finished the 2011 ODI World Cup final match against the Sri Lanka team at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 2.

Gautam Gambhir played a pivotal role in India's victory in the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka. Chasing a target of 275, India had a rocky start as Virender Sehwag was dismissed on the second ball and Sachin Tendulkar fell for 18 runs. Gambhir and Virat Kohli then stabilized the innings with a partnership of 83 runs.

MS Dhoni came to the crease before all-rounder Yuvraj Singh during the summit clash in Mumbai. The left-handed batter fell short of a well-deserved century as he was dismissed for 97 runs off 122 balls. MS Dhoni led the Indian team to clinch the World Cup title with an unbeaten 91 runs off 79 balls in the final.

I Wish I Had Finished That Game - Gautam Gambhir

On Friday, June 21, Gautam Gambhir expressed regret over not being the one to hit the winning runs. Gambhir emphasized that his role was to finish the game, not leave it to someone else. He wished that he could "turn back the clock" and score the last run in the match.

"I wish I had finished that game. It was my job to finish the game, rather than leaving someone to finish the game. If I had to turn back the clock, I would go back there and score the last run, irrespective of how many runs I scored," Gambhir said at a 'Rise To Leadership' seminar.

Got This Honour Of Captaining India - Gautam Gambhir

The 42-year-old said that he has no regrets over not having a long stint as India's captain. Gambhir highlighted that his primary goal was always to contribute to his team's success rather than personal achievements. He emphasized his commitment to making his country and any team he played for win.

"I have always thought about performing for the fans, and that has been my thought since the last year of my training career. In the middle, I got the honor of captaining India for six games. I tried doing it to the best of my ability," Gambhir said.

"Otherwise, I have no regrets whatsoever because my job was not to captain the series. My job was to make my country win, and whichever team I play for, make that team win," he added.

Gautam Gambhir is the frontrunner to succeed Rahul Dravid as India's head coach after the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the USA. He recently participated in a virtual interview with the BCCI's Cricket Advisory Committee, and an official announcement about his appointment is expected soon.
