Former India batsman Yuvraj Singh has hailed Rohit Sharma as the number one captain after the latter led the team to triumph in the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

India, on Saturday (June 29), defeated South Africa by 7 runs in a thrilling final to clinch the trophy for the second time and first time since 2007. The Men in Blue had their back against the wall after being reduced to 34 for 3 inside the powerplay. However, Virat Kohli roared back to form and let his bat do the talking on the grand stage once again.

The former India skipper, who had been facing severe criticism for his poor run with the bat in the tournament, went on to play a brilliant knock of 76 runs to guide the team to 176 for 7. Axar Patel also played a crucial knock of 47 runs for the team.

In reply, South Africa lost two wickets inside the powerplay as well but recovered soon. Heinrich Klaasen scored a whirlwind fifty to put his team in the driver's seat. At one stage, the Proteas were on 151 for 4 and needed only 26 runs from the last 4 overs with Klaasen and David Miller batting in the middle. However, India's bowlers staged a remarkable comeback to restrict South Africa to 169 for 8.

On the other hand, Yuvraj Singh said: "I am very happy for Rohit Sharma. He's a brilliant captain.  Towards the end when the match was in a critical situation, he brought Bumrah in at the right moment, and that changed the game.

"Winning from there was a huge achievement. I am very happy for the guy, very happy for coach Rahul Dravid, and Virat Kohli," added Yuvraj Singh.

The legendary batsman then went on to hail Rohit Sharma as the number one captain, saying: "Captain Rohit Sharma, love the guy. Love the Hitman, I am very happy for him. Number one captain. "
