The reports of former India captain Rahul Dravid agreeing to become the next head coach of the Indian team have been doing rounds for some time now. However, in the latest development, Dravid has likely said yes to taking on the assignment as well.
This has led to former India keeper and BCCI chief selector MSK Prasad calling Dravid the best possible candidate to take over from Ravi Shastri, whose contract ends at the completion of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021. Apart from Shastri, the support staff of bowling coach B Arun, and fielding coach R Sridhar will also leave their posts.
Prasad said Dravid can easily gel with Shastri and the current team management and is the best candidate for the role.
“I told earlier also that Rahul Dravid will be the best candidate for coach of Team India. He can gel up with Ravi Shastri and his team easily. In the tenure of Ravi Shastri, Team India did so well, won series in Australia. Back-to-back winning series is not an easy task and if we want this performance to continue then Rahul Dravid is the best option,” Prasad told ANI.
Rahul Dravid Agrees To Take Up Full-Time Head Coach Position Of Team India
Rahul Dravid is currently the head of the National Cricket Academy in his hometown of Bengaluru and has had success as head coach of the India A and India U19 teams. In fact, the India U19 team won the 2018 Youth World Cup under his guidance and Prithvi Shaw’s captaincy.
“Dravid has agreed and it cannot get better. The other positions will now be looked into while Vikram stays as the batting coach. The Indian team is in a state of transition with youngsters coming in and they have all worked with Dravid and it will be all the easier for Indian cricket to continue on its path to become world-beaters on the pitch,” a source told ANI.
Dravid had recently taken the mantle of head coach of the Indian team when a white-ball specialist squad visited Sri Lanka for 6 limited-overs matches. India won the ODI series 2-1 but lost the T20Is 1-2, with two of the T20I matches being affected due to a COVID case in the Indian camp.
India will open its T20 World Cup campaign against Pakistan on October 24 in Dubai. After the upcoming T20 World Cup, Virat Kohli will also be stepping down as the side’s captain in the shortest format.
