Former England skipper Nasser Hussain has explained what David Warner needs to do on the final day of the ongoing Ashes series to ensure he gets to play his last Test in front of his home crowd at the Sydney Cricket Ground next year.

The under-fire Australia star has already announced that the SCG Test against Pakistan in January next year will be his last. However, his place in the Australian Test team is under question for quite some time now. Several former Australian players have openly called for his exclusion from the team due to his consistently poor performances in the red-ball format.

David Warner’s performance in the ongoing Ashes has not been impressive either. In the first nine innings of the series, he had scored just 225 runs at a mediocre average of 25.00, before the Australia opener finally showed some fight on day four of the ongoing Test at the Oval. In his last-ever Ashes Test, the southpaw scored a fine fifty and was unbeaten on 58 before rain brought an early end to the day’s proceedings.

And as Warner gears up for the crucial fifth day’s play, Nasser Hussain has said that the veteran opener could get the green light to play his last-ever Test in Sydney if he manages to score a century. While there have been calls to drop Warner from the Test team, Hussain believes the situation will change if the batsman manages to capitalize on his start.

“Warner knows that if he gets a hundred here he will get his wish and bow out in Sydney next year,” Hussain said on Sky Sports.

“If he gets out just after lunch after another start and another missed opportunity [he might not]. Both he and Khawaja have played excellently. Khawaja has looked busy with his batting but also with his running between the wickets, which is what Warner likes,” he added.

Meanwhile, Australia have made a strong start to their chase. Chasing 384, the visitors were on 135 for no loss at stumps on day four.
