Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir has opened up on his infamous fight with Virat Kohli during the IPL earlier this year. The match between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Ekana Stadium was marred by the huge controversy that started with a verbal war between Virat Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq during the game.
It all began when the former India captain made some animated gestures towards the Afghan pacer when he walked out to bat. The umpires and other players had to intervene to bring the situation under control. However, things took an ugly turn after the game.
During the customary handshake between the teams after the game, Naveen-ul-Haq stood up to Virat Kohli and decided against shaking hands with him. The situation escalated further when Gautam Gambhir became involved as well, engaging in a heated argument with his former India teammate. Other players had to intervene to bring the situation under control.
Gautam Gambhir on his altercation with Virat Kohli:
Speaking on ANI podcast, Gautam Gambhir opened up on the altercation when he was asked about it. The former India opener said that he had all the rights to defend his players after the game. Known for his bold nature, the World Cup winner said that ‘no one can come and walk over my players’ while he was the mentor.
“As a mentor, no one can come and walk over my players and I’ve got a very different belief. Till the time game was on, I had no right to interfere but once the game was over, if someone still gets into a heated argument with my players, I’ve got all the rights to defend them,” said Gautam Gambhir.
