New Zealand and Afghanistan go head to head in match 14 of the T20 World Cup 2024 in Guyana on June 8 from 5 am IST. This is Afghanistan's second group game and the first of the World Cup for New Zealand.
Afghanistan registered a thumping win over Uganda in their first game. After scoring 183/5 with the bat, they bowled out Afghanistan for just 58. Their openers showed great form with the bat and Rashid Khan their skipper took two wickets. The star of the match was Fazalhaq Farooqi who took his maiden T20I fifer and the first fifer of the World Cup as well.
Heading into the T20 World Cup, both teams played a decent amount of T20I cricket. They lost 2-1 to Sri Lanka and won 2-1 against Ireland.
New Zealand, on the other hand, lost to Australia first and then drew 2-2 against Pakistan. Thus players are in that mold of T20I cricket and decent form as well. Several players from both teams played in the recently concluded IPL 2024 as well.
New Zealand, Afghanistan, and co-hosts West Indies are perfectly capable of making it to the next round. Even PNG tested the Windies in their first match. Teams will have to keep their nerves in the crunch moments of the game to ensure that they end up winning the match.
The T20 World Cup 2024 will be played from June 2-29. The final will be played in Barbados on June 29. The matches will be held across three venues in the US and six in the Caribbean. Meanwhile, this is the second match in Guyana.
West Indies getting the opportunity to host the World Cup for the second time should ensure that they prepare sporting wickets for a good contest between bat and ball.
Already the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York has received a lot of criticism for preparing a below-par wicket for the South Africa vs Sri Lanka game. Cricket experts have taken note and warning signs have already been sent to the ground officials for preparing a sporting wicket.
