New Zealand and PNG go head to head in match 39 of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in Trinidad on Monday, June 17. This is the penultimate group game in the World Cup. The West Indies vs Afghanistan game is the last.

New Zealand and PNG are both out of the tournament. This is the first time that the Kiwis have been eliminated from the Group stage of the T20 World Cup. They played the final of the 2021 T20 World Cup and played the semi-final of the last World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

It was overall a very disappointing performance from the Kiwis. They could not score 160 against Afghanistan and 150 against the West Indies. They managed a consolation win against Uganda and are expected to win their final group game against PNG.

Papua New Guinea, on the other hand, are yet to win a game in this World Cup. They lost to the co-hosts and then were outplayed by Afghanistan and Uganda. They fought hard against the Windies in their very first game and need another fighting performance.

With two more Group stage matches remaining the Super 8 teams have been decided from each group. India and the USA qualified from Group A, England and Australia from Group B, West Indies, and Afghanistan from Group C, and South Africa and Bangladesh from Group D.

New Zealand vs PNG Head-to-Head Records: Key Statistics

The two teams are yet to play in T20I international cricket, let alone in T20 World Cups. This is the first-ever T20 World Cup for the PNG side.

New Zealand vs PNG: Last 5 Encounters

As said above, this is the first-ever meeting between the two sides in T20 World Cups. Both teams have never played each other in any format of the game previously.

New Zealand finds themselves in a disappointing situation not to have qualified for the knockout stages of the tournament. New Zealand under Kane Williamson has made the knockouts in almost all of the previous ICC tournaments barring this one.

The Kiwis made an early exit from the tournament. This time around, they did not look prepared for the big stage. Many of the players played well in the World Cup. They even played a bilateral series against Pakistan.

However, they started the tournament almost a week later than the other teams which perhaps caught them off guard. They failed to get themselves associated with the conditions quickly which caught them off guard in the game against Afghanistan.

For PNG, the matches should have been a good learning curve. They gave their best on all three of them but were not just experienced enough to take on the big teams. The tournament should prepare them better for the future.

Conclusion

This has been New Zealand's worst T20 World Cup campaign. For the first time, they did not make the knockout stages and faced a group stage exit. The management should analyze where it all went wrong for the side and aim to come better prepared for the Champions Trophy 2025.
