West Indies middle-order batter Nicholas Pooran scripted history by breaking the world record for the most runs in T20 cricket within a single calendar year. Nicholas Pooran surpassed Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan during a match in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024.

Pooran has established himself as one of the top batters globally, particularly in T20 internationals. He has showcased exceptional performance over the past year. The southpaw excelled for the Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League and the West Indies on the international stage.

The left-handed batter has made an impact with the bat for the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League 2024 season. He has scored 312 runs in 9 innings at a decent average of 39.00 and an exceptional strike rate of 175.28, with two half-centuries and a best score of 97 runs.

Pooran is leading the race for the most T20 runs in 2024. South Africa's Reeza Hendricks is in second place with 1,555 runs from 47 innings, while Pakistan’s Babar Azam is next with 1,480 runs in just 35 innings. Australian opener Travis Head is in fourth place with 1,442 runs from 39 innings.

Nicholas Pooran Breaks Mohammad Rizwan's Massive T20 Record

Nicholas Pooran scored 27 runs off 15 balls for the Trinbago Knight Riders against the Barbados Royals in a recent match. He has completed 2,059 runs in 65 innings at an impressive average of over 42. Pooran hasn't yet scored a century in 2024 but has hit 14 fifties, including several scores in the 90s.

In 2021, Rizwan scored 2,036 runs in 45 innings at an impressive average of 56.66, including one century and 18 half-centuries. England batters Alex Hales and Jos Buttler are in third and fourth place with 1,946 and 1,833 runs, respectively. Rizwan also holds the fifth position with 1,817 runs in 2022.

Virat Kohli holds the record for the most T20 runs in a calendar year for India. The former Indian skipper scored 1,614 runs in 31 T20 matches during 2016. Suryakumar Yadav scored 1,503 runs in 41 T20 matches in 2022 and 1,338 runs in 34 T20 games in 2023.

Pooran recently set a remarkable record during a CPL match against the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots by becoming the first player to hit 150 sixes in a single calendar year (2024) in T20 cricket. The batter surpassed the previous record held by legendary opener Chris Gayle, who hit 135 sixes in 2015.
