West Indies cricket team has named wicket-keeper batter, Nicholas Pooran, as the captain of the ODI and T20I sides. Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed the same on their website on Tuesday.

Pooran was the vice-captain of the side when former skipper, Kieron Pollard, was leading the way. Following Pollard’s international retirement, Pooran was the suitable choice. Notably, Shai Hope’s name has been recommended for ODI vice-captaincy.

I am truly honored to be appointed captain of the West Indies team. I am following the footsteps of several giants of the game who have created an amazing legacy for West Indies cricket. This is indeed a prestigious role, a pivotal position in the West Indian society, as cricket is the force that brings us all West Indians together.”

“Selection panel was impressed with Nicholas Pooran’s leadership” – CWI Director

CWI director of cricket, Jimmy Adams, said that Pooran’s appointment was a given considering his impressive outing in the CG Insurance T20I series at home against Australia last year. Following the appointment, his first series as a full-time skipper will be against The Netherlands in the 3-match ODI series in Amstelveen.

The Selection Panel believes that Nicholas has matured as a player and were impressed with his leadership of both teams when Kieron Pollard had been absent.
