Rohit Sharma-led India, on Tuesday (October 1), beat Bangladesh by seven wickets in the second Test to clean sweep the two-match IND vs BAN series.
Set a modest target of 95 runs in 62 overs, Team India crossed the finishing line in the 18th over. Rohit Sharma swung his bat right from the start but could not last long. Mehidy Hasan Miraz sent him back for 8. Later, the spinner struck again to remove Shubman Gill (6) cheaply as well to leave India two down for 34 in the 5th over.
However, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli did not let Bangladesh make more inroads. Jaiswal went on to hit his second half-century of the game and shared a 58-run stand with Kohli. He was dismissed for 51 by Taijul Islam when India needed only 3 runs to win. Kohli and Rishabh Pant then took the team over the finishing line.
Earlier in the day, Bangladesh started their day on 26 for 2. Shadman Islam and first-innings centurion Mominul Haque began the proceedings with the bat. The onus was on them to give their team a solid start. However, Ravichandran Ashwin struck in the third over of the day to send back Mominul.
Islam and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto then steadied the ship with a 50-plus stand. However, before they could bat their team to a safe position, Ravindra Jadeja broke the stand by dismissing Shanto for 19.
The dismissal opened the floodgates as Bangladesh lost three more wickets in quick succession to find themselves reeling at 94/7 from 91/3. Mushfiqur Rahim then provided some resistance with the bat, scoring 37 but found little support from the other end.
In the end, Bangladesh were all out for just 146 runs. For India, Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, and Jadeja picked up three wickets each.
Early days but it's been a good start: Rohit Sharma
Speaking after the brilliant win, India captain Rohit Sharma started by talking about the positive start under new coach Gautam Gambhir. At the same time, Rohit also made sure to pay tribute to former head coach Rahul Dravid, saying that the team had a fantastic time under him.
"We all keep going. Obviously at some stage we had to start working with different personnel. When Rahul bhai said he was done working here. We had a fantastic time but life moves on. Gautam Gambhir, I've played with him and know what sort of mindset he comes in with. Early days but it's been a good start," said Rohit Sharma.
Speaking further, Rohit Sharma shared the team's mindset after the second and third days were washed out, saying:
"Once we lost two and a half days, when we came on day 4 we wanted to get them out as quickly as possible and see what we can do with the bat. When they got bowled out for 230, it wasn't about the runs we get but the overs we got at them," he said.
Rohit also said that India were willing to take the risk of getting out for a low score in the first innings. He said that the team was even willing to get bowled out for 100-150 in order to get as many overs as possible in the second innings. Rohit Sharma also lauded Akash Deep for his heroics.
"Pitch didn't have much. To make a game out of it on that pitch was a superb effort. It was a risk we were willing to take because when you're trying to bat like that, you can be bundled out for a low score. But we were ready for it even if we got bowled out for 100-150," said Rohit Sharma.
"He's been good (talking about Akash Deep). Lot of domestic cricket he has played. When you come up through the ranks like that, there are a lot of overs in the legs. He has the quality and the skill. Good body as well - can bowl long spells. You have to make sure you prepare your bench strength."
