Indian middle-order dynamic batter Shreyas Iyer has made a startling revelation where he mentioned the Mumbai Indians as his favourite side until he himself resorted to playing in the IPL and has also lauded the Punjab Kings coach Ricky Ponting for the team's unimaginable success in IPL 2025.
The current skipper of the Punjab Kings in the IPL and the former title-winning skipper of the Kolkata Knight Riders have been sidelined from the Asia Cup squad. The batter has, however, made a recent appearance on a podcast named The Quest Talk and has made some startling revelations.
Shreyas Iyer reveals his favourite team from IPL
In the podcast, when asked by the host which team he had supported as a young boy before he actually got to playing the IPL himself, which he started in 2015 for the Delhi Capitals. Shreyas had a very unexpected response to it, as he sidelined all three teams he has represented till now in the IPL.
"Any favourite team before you actually started playing in the IPL?" the host asked Shreyas Iyer.
"Mumbai Indians, obviously. Since I come from Mumbai, I obviously supported them," Iyer's honest confession on being a Mumbai Indians fanboy someday.
From being a Mumbai Indians fanboy to not losing against them in the last 1756 days and playing a hell of a knock against them in knockouts 🥵

Shreyas Iyer lauds the synergy between PBKS players in IPL 2025
The Punjab Kings missed out on their maiden IPL title for the second time in the history of the IPL. This was also their second season as IPL finalists after IPL 2024. Shreyas and Ponting have paired for the Delhi Capitals earlier to lead them to the Finals as well.
Though the team might not have had their hands on the trophy, they have won hearts with their promising show. Several players from the team, including Iyer himself, and openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, all earned high praise for their commendable show.
"Couldn't lift the trophy, but obviously, the amalgamation and the synergy we built this year were through the roof. So, definitely positive vibes going forward to the next and keeping fingers crossed that we lift the trophy next year," Iyer portrayed his high spirits as the Punjab Kings skipper.
The eyes chico they never lie.

Iyer credits coach Ricky Ponting for PBKS' success in the IPL season
Shreyas Iyer had a quirky mention of Ponting as a great coach, while he completely discredited Gautam Gambhir, who was his mentor in the IPL 2024, which he won. This also hinted towards the great bond of Iyer with Ponting since their Delhi days, and a possible strained relationship with Gambhir.
"Once you have a good coach, a positive coach, I think it's his job to get all the players together and build that form of camaraderie," Shreyas mentions the importance of a coach's role in the team.
"I felt this year when Ricky Ponting came in as the PBKS head coach, he made everyone comfortable; he made everyone feel they belonged to the team and was open and honest about whatever he said," huge praise for Ricky Ponting from Shreyas Iyer.
"So once you get that sort of feedback from your coach, that you can come back and perform at the best of your abilities, you are confident enough, and at the back of your mind, you feel very comfortable in the dressing room," Shreyas concluded on Ponting.
