Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has lauded Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer after the latter’s impressive show at ICC World Cup 2023. Shreyas Iyer began his World Cup campaign with a duck against Australia and ended the tournament with 530 runs in 11 matches at an average of 66.25 with two hundreds and three fifties.

Iyer recovered from his back injury as he made a comeback into the Indian squad in the World Cup. He started with a four in the World Cup final but was dismissed for just four. India lost his wicket at a crucial time and his wicket was one of the main reasons why India scored a below-par total in the end.

Iyer scored 105 runs in the semi-final against New Zealand but could not replicate that knock in the final. The right-hander scored four back-to-back fifties since the match against Sri Lanka with back-to-back tons against the Netherlands and New Zealand.

Batting Gainst Spin Is Shreyas Iyer’s Speciality: Ravichandran Ashwin

Iyer got over his weakness against the short ball and displayed some brilliant form with the bat in the World Cup and cemented his spot in the Indian team in the process. Ravichandran Ashwin, who was part of the Indian squad that made the final, in a recent Youtube video spoke about what sets Iyer apart from the rest of the Indian batters.

“Batting against spin and taking them down is Shreyas’ specialty and he is a standout performer. Chasing excellence is a rare commodity in sports. If somebody does something unique, people, instead of appreciating it, tell them not to do it” Ashwin said.

The right-hander coped with criticism of his weakness against the short-ball but this World Cup campaign and his performances have helped him silence his critics.

The right-hander is unavailable for the first three T20Is against Australia and will return as the vice-captain of the side in the last two games. He is being seen as someone with the potential to lead India in the future.
