The 31-year-old New Zealand National Cricket Team right-arm quick Matt Henry knocked over the 21-year-old Afghanistan National Cricket Team explosive batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the 16th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai on Wednesday, October 18.

Chasing the target of 289 runs against the BlackCaps, Afghan openers Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran were unable to provide their side with a good start. Both the openers fell when the score of Afghanistan was 27.

Gurbaz looked decent initially and smoked Henry for an 85-m six down the ground in the 6th over. However, the Kiwi speedster was quick to take his revenge as he cleaned up the batsman in the same over.

On the 5th ball of the over, Henry bowled a good length delivery outside off-stump and it seamed in. Gurbaz tried to push at it and got a thick inside edge which led to the ball shattering the stumps.

Gurbaz scored 11 runs off 21 balls, with 1 four. Overall, he has got a poor record during the run-chase in ODIs as in his last 10 innings he has scored 88 runs in 200 balls. The batter has registered scores of 4, 7, 14, 2, 22, 18, 5, 1, 4, 11.

Earlier, Afghanistan won the toss and elected to field first in the match. They weren’t off to a good start in the match but made an exceptional comeback by reducing the Kiwis from 109/1 to 110/4.

However, Tom Latham joined forces with Glenn Phillips when New Zealand looked in trouble and steadied the ship. The duo together added 144 runs in 153 balls and pushed the Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side on the back foot. In the end, Mark Chapman and Mitchell Santner remained unbeaten and steered New Zealand to 288/6 in 50 overs.
