The 31-year-old New Zealand National Cricket Team all-rounder Mitchell Santner created history by knocking back the stumps of the Afghanistan National Cricket Team all-rounder Mohammad Nabi in the 16th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai on Wednesday, October 18.

Mitchell Santner bowled really well for New Zealand while defending the 289-run target but was unable to get a wicket initially. Although the star all-rounder didn’t get a wicket with the ball, his extraordinary on-field contribution helped Lockie Ferguson pick a wicket and dismiss Afghanistan National Cricket Team captain Hashmatullah Shahidi for a low score.

Meanwhile, Mitchell Santner added the first wicket to his tally 31st over of the second innings. He pitched a delivery on the middle and leg stump and it turned enough to beat the edge of Mohammad Nabi’s bat and rattled the stumps.

Nabi played for a straighter line and was shocked that he missed it. The veteran was back into the hut after scoring 7 runs off 9 balls, with 1 boundary.

As Santner dismissed Nabi, he created history by becoming just the second New Zealand spinner to reach the milestone of 100 ODI wickets after Daniel Vettori.

100 – Mitchell Santner*

63 – Nathan McCullum

61 – Ish Sodhi

Talking about the match, New Zealand lost the toss and were invited to bat first in the match. At one point, the BlackCaps looked in trouble but Tom Latham joined forces with Glenn Phillips and bailed the side out of trouble. The duo stitched together 144 runs in 153 balls, pushed the Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side on the back foot, and helped New Zealand post 288/6 on the board in 50 overs.

Defending the target, the Kiwi bowlers were on point with their lines and lengths and they annihilated the Afghanistan batting line-up. New Zealand bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals and bundled out the Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side for 139 in 34.4 overs.
