New Zealand trounced Sri Lanka in the 1st ODI of their three-match series, defeating the South Asian nation by a whopping 198 runs. Player of the Match Henry Shipley has discussed his solid bowling performance in his first international match in front of a home crowd.

Having made his ODI debut earlier this year against India, this was only the 4th international match for the all-rounder and the first in his home country.

Shipley did not disappoint in from of his native New Zealanders, picking up 5 wickets, to all from Sri Lanka’s top 7. His spell was influential in bowling the Lankan Lions out for just 76 runs.

Speaking about the crowd ovation he received from Eden Park in Auckland, Henry said –

IPL 2023 | India National Cricket Team | Chennai Super Kings (CSK) | Delhi Capitals (DC) | Gujarat Titans (GT) | Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) | Lucknow Supergiants (LSG) | Mumbai Indians (MI) | Punjab Kings (PBKS) | Rajasthan Royals (RR) | Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) | SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH)

“Being able to play in front of a home crowd and hear that roar when things are going our way is pretty special, and something that will stick with me for a long time. The noise in the crowd today and seeing the stump go flying was pretty cool.”

Despite short boundaries, the pitch itself proved challenging in the first ODI. NZ was themselves bowled out for 274 runs in the first innings, with keeper-batsman Finn Allen bring the top scorer with 51.

Lanka’s innings, on the other hand, never got off the ground. Losing wickets with high regularity, many of them by the hand of Henry Shipley, resulted in them losing the match by such a massive margin.

New Zealand finds themselves on top of the ICC Men’s World Cup Super League

ICC Men’s World Cup Super League, which will determine the countries that will qualify for the ODI World Cup later this year, sees New Zealand climb to the top of the table following their thumping of Sri Lanka in the first ODI.

The league table provides 10 points for a win, 5 points for a tie/no contest, and deducts 1 point per over of slow over rate. Each side will play 24 matches in the Super League. They can also play more ODIs, which will not be included in the league.

At the end of the cycle, the top 8 teams will directly qualify for the World Cup, while the subsequent 5 teams battle it out in a qualifier to figure out the remaining two teams.

The teams that have qualified are – New Zealand, England, India (hosts), Bangladesh, Pakistan, Australia, and Afghanistan. While West Indies, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Ireland battle it out for the 8th spot. Zimbabwe and Netherlands are out of the race and will most definitely play in the qualifiers.
