Following the Test series win, New Zealand are currently hosting the One-Day International series against Sri Lanka. The young Kiwi batter Finn Allen got a lifeline after the ball hit the stumps during the first ODI of the three-match series against Sri Lanka at Eden Park in Auckland on Saturday, March 25.

Sri Lankan won the toss and decided to bowl first in the series opener. The Black Caps fielded a young line after allowing their main players to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Lankan Lions bowled out the opposition for 274 runs in 49.3 overs, with Chamika Karunaratne taking four wickets for 43 runs in his nine overs.

The incident took place during New Zealand’s innings, when the opening batter Finn Allen was batting on nine runs off six balls. Sri Lankan fast bowler Kasun Rajitha beat Allen’s outside edge, and the ball hit the off-stumps but the bails didn’t fall. Rajitha didn’t believe it for some time as everyone on the ground was stunned, including the batter.

Finn Allen took advantage of the opportunity to score his fifth half-century in 50-over cricket. The right-handed batter scored 51 runs off 49 balls before being dismissed while attacking Chamika Karunaratne in the 19th over. Middle-order batsman Darryl Mitchell, wicketkeeper-batsman Glenn Phillips, and young all-rounder Rachin Ravindra added valuable runs to help the team put up a decent total.

Finn Allen will next be seen in action for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Faf du Plessis-led team will begin their campaign in the mega tournament against the Mumbai Indians on April 2 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, their first match at their home ground since May 2019.
